These
are the most frequently-asked questions concerning
our WDP Keyboard Wedge and USB Readers.
If you still can't
find what you are looking for, email
us with your question or pick up the phone and give
us a call!
Will the WDP work with my software?
If your software accepts data from the keyboard, it will accept data from the WDP too. By default, the WDP transmits an ENTER key as the last keystroke transmitted, but you can change that to TAB or any combination of up to 15 keys.
Is USB or PC-Y cable attachment better?
Both interface as a 2nd keyboard, transmitting
scanned bar code data as keyed data. As long as your
operating system is Windows® 98SE, XP, ME, 2000, or Vista USB is the best option because:
- The cable
is cheaper
- There are no keyboard timing issues with USB
- Uunplugging the reader from the cable does not disable the keyboard.
With USB, you will have to install a driver the first time you attach it to your
PC, but that driver is the standard USB keyboard driver
that comes with Windows, and is either on your hard
disk already, or will be on your Windows CD. Installation
is simple.
What if I don't have a USB keyboard on my PC, can the USB reader still work?
Yes. It will work with a USB keyboard attached or it will work with a PS/2 keyboard attached.
I don't have any spare USB ports. What should I order?
Either order a WDP with a Y cable, or get an inexpensive powered USB hub to expand the USB ports available; be sure it is a hub that has the external power supply available.
Does the WDP have any special support for Excel®?
You can automatically perform a SEARCH command by setting the reader to transmit a Ctrl-F before the bar code data is transmitted. You can then program in TAB(s) after the bar code data and the some fixed data to be recorded in a selected column. The WDP is very versatile for automating worksheet updates.
Is software to print bar codes included with a WDP?
No, printing software is purchased
separately.
Should I choose a CCD or a Laser Reader?
The CCD reader reads 90% of typical
bar codes well; UPC and EAN bar codes are easily read.
It is less expensive than a laser reader and reads
bar codes at a distance of up to 6 inches (15cm). It does
not poorly printed high density bar codes, bar code
with a width of more than 4 inches (10cm), or very high density
bar codes, (narrow bar width less than .005" (.13mm)).
The laser reader reads anything the
CCD can read plus it reads bar codes greater than 4
inches (10cm) in width, reads from a greater distance from
the bar code - typically up to 15 inches (38cm), reads very high density bar
codes, and poorly printed bar codes better. The laser scanner
is more expensive, but you are assured of reading the
widest range of bar codes.
How does the WDP work on a Macintosh?
All of the Macs come with USB ports. USB is USB, on a PC or Mac; there is no difference. The WDP imitates a USB keyboard and uses the built-in drivers on the Mac.
I lost my documentation on the WDP. How do I replace it?
Hardware manuals and Setup Menus are available on our website under Downloads.
